Anvil
Alcatraz Line up: 2019
The 2009 rockumentary ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ gave the popularity of the band around singer/guitarist Lips a tremendous boost. The DVD elevated Anvil to cult status whereas previously they were an era favourite amongst die hard fans. It’s very surprising it took that long considering the fine records the Canadian outfit released in the 80s. Their debut Hard ‘n’ Heavy (1981), their sophomore effort ‘Metal on Metal’ (1982) and the sublime ‘Forged in Fire’ (1983) contained a truckload of instant classics. Over the years, however, interest in the band gradually died down but they always remained a live force. Ever-smiling vocalist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow knows how to tame a crowd. “Can we make it? You bet we can!!”. Songs like ‘March of the Crabs’, ‘666’, ‘Winged Assassins’, ‘Free as the Wind’,‘Mothra’ and ‘Metal on Metal’ are live staples and even after four decades, their fans are as loyal as they come. Anvil stands for pure and unadulterated metal fun.
