Long-time thrashers will already be aware that a new Dark Angel album – the first in over 30 years - is in the works and on top of that we get to welcome them to Alcatraz this year.
From their debut ‘We Have Arrived’ (1985), Dark Angel stamped their authority on the darkest recesses of the thrash scene. Their lyrics tied in nicely with their musical output. Populated by murderers, paedophiles and lunatics, their world view painted a bleak picture. The band from Downey, California, acquired immortal fame in the 80s with ultrafast and protracted songs marked by tempo changes and breathtaking instrumental passages. The current line-up consists of drum beast Gene Hoglan, guitarist Eric Meyer, frontman Ron Rinehart and bassist Mike Gonzalez, who helped define the sound that elevated them to cult status in their early days. Despite severe adversity that side-lined them for an entire decade on two separate occasions, they reformed and returned to the live stage. The pioneers of progressive/technical thrash metal have returned to the front in a live line-up that benefits from additional firepower thanks to the inclusion of guitarist Laura Christine.
