After leaving Coal Chamber, frontman Dez Fafara formed DevilDriver. Their eponymous debut dropped in 2003 and made an impact in Europe and the US alike.
The band’s amalgamation of groove metal and melodic death metal struck a chord and their sophomore effort ‘The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand’ (2005) added to their fanbase. A band’s third album is always considered crucial and in DevilDriver’s case ‘The Last Kind Words’ (2007) signalled their big breakthrough. The album was succeeded by the highly acclaimed ‘Winter Kills’ (2013). While they draw inspiration from a variety of genres and bands including Opeth, In Flames and Slayer, they have always charted their own course: 2016’s ‘Trust No One’ (2016) offers the same mix of groove, thrash and melodic death metal that built their reputation. Since their 2018 appearance here they’ve added the ambitious double-tap ‘Dealing with Demons Vol. I & II’ to their catalogue, featuring outstanding guitar work from the Tiemann-Spreitzer tandem as well as Fafara’s trademark impassioned vocals.
