Fu Manchu have been associated with the Palm Desert scene for over thirty years and are one of the most respected and beloved stoner rock bands.
They are often bracketed together with Kyuss, that other Californian band that shaped the stoner landscape in the early 90s. Originally formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band called Virulence, it took them almost a decade including a string of personnel changes and a name change to release their studio debut with ‘No One Rides for Free’. In their early years they forged a solid live reputation opening for such acts as Kyuss, White Zombie, Corrosion of Conformity and Marilyn Manson. Meanwhile they‘ve put out a total of 13 studio albums and several EPs in addition to guest appearances on many releases by other artists. At Alcatraz they’ll be presenting their most recent outing. The first half of ‘The Return of Tomorrow’ (2024) offers the kind of tight rockers they are known for whereas the second half explores their more mellow side.
