In Austin, Texas, an extreme metal troupe of note has reared its snarling head. Six years after their last full-length effort to date, Mammoth Grinder has returned to recording ways in some style.
Following the acclaimed ‘Cosmic Crypt’ (2018) expectations were high but with ‘Undying Spectral Resonance’, the new EP of the American super-group headed by founder Chris Ulsh certainly doesn’t disappoint. Ulsh recorded all the instruments and also supplied all the morbid grunts as the band’s hardcore roots are pushed to the back burner on the new EP in favour of a punky death metal assault. Asphyx, Obituary, Vader, Dismember and early Sepultura are names that spring to mind, with special mention for US black metal outfit Demoncy. Coming on the heels of a considerable hiatus, this EP has us pining for the next full record but meanwhile we’ll gladly settle for a punishing performance this summer. Mammoth Grinder are set to hit Alcatraz with a new line-up consisting of Sebastian Phillips (Noisem/Exhumed) on guitar and Andy Horn (Loud Night) on bass. The kit is still manned by Ryan Parrish (Iron Reagan).
