For a quarter century, technical death metal has been Psycroptic’s poison of choice. Formed on the Australian island of Tasmania by brothers Dave (drums) and Joe (guitar) Haley, they unleashed their debut ‘The Isle of Disenchantment’ in 2001 but their breakout album came in 2006 with ‘Symbols of Failure’.
Following its release they opened for Deicide on their 2007 European tour. Pscyroptic deliver a masterclass in technical precision and relentless intensity: unlike the genre’s more brutal proponents, their tracks are fuelled by groove-laden rhythms, creating a strong sense of catchiness. The vocals have evolved from guttural growls to a more decipherable, yet still aggressive, mid-range style, giving their more recent material a distinct identity as exemplified by their last studio album to date, ‘Divine Council’ (2022). Early 2025 saw them touring with genre colleagues and co-headliners Nile and Six Feet Under, and this summer the prison gates will swing wide for this auspicious Alcatraz debut!
