‘English heritage black metal’ is the name of the subgenre plied by Manchester sons Winterfylleth. Formed in 2006, Winterfylleth – the Old English name for the month of October - have long since outgrown the scene that spawned them.
Winterfylleth regales us with tales of the glorious history of old Albion. Controversy arose after their excellent debut ‘The Ghost of Heritage’ (2008) dropped but a personnel change and one album later they had already built a loyal underground following. Razor-sharp, fast and melodic, their epic and emotionally profound compositions are marked by singing harmonies. 2018’s ‘The Hallowing of Heirdom’ brought a radical change of pace with a 100% acoustic album but if some fans found that hard to stomach, 2020’s ‘The Reckoning Dawn’ offered a reprieve: drawn-out epic tracks alternate with all-guns-blazing black attacks interspersed with acoustic interludes; in Germany the album was named Black Metal Album of the Year and their latest slab ‘The Imperious Horizon’ (2024) is every bit as good.
