Some bands like to play it safe by choosing not to break the conventions of their own genre. Not so for Between the Buried and Me, who have been steering their own course since the dawn of the new millennium.
The North Carolina five piece effortlessly zip back and forth between progressive and death metal while incorporating influences from other genres. They themselves label their music ‘newwavepolkagrunge’, the perfect excuse to experiment with a recorder, keyboards and even a xylophone. The result is a supersonic voyage of discovery that will certainly appeal to prog metal fans. Their breakout album was 2007’s ‘Colors’ but it wasn’t until they were signed by Metal Blade that the sky became the limit. Their 20th anniversary year was marred by COVID but for this year’s 25th anniversary it’s all systems go. Between the Buried and Me make for a welcome change in an otherwise traditional metal landscape and more than a decade after their last appearance here, it’s high time to renew the acquaintance.
