Conjurer formed in the UK’s Midlands in 2014. Fed up with metalcore, guitarists Brady Deeprose and Dan Nightingale decided to focus instead on more extreme forms of metal.
Taking inspiration from the likes of Converge, Sumac, Cult of Luna and sludge-oriented Mastodon, Conjurer doesn’t fall for clichés and effortlessly navigates a variety of styles. All the more impressive is their ability to construct a tightly woven tapestry from the varied input: (post-)sludge, death, doom, black metal and hardcore blend seamlessly into compositions that often ignore the traditional chorus-verse song structure. Even before the release of their 2016 EP ‘I’, rousing performances had earned them a reputation on the local music scene; ‘I’ then laid the foundation for their debut full-length ‘Mire’ (2018). The frenetic violence on ‘Mire’ made way for a more melodic, varied and experimental approach on their second album ‘Pathos’ (2022). Conjurer sound like a band way beyond their years, with a palette that offers everything from the crushingly heavy to more mellow soundscapes - Opeth anyone? There’s no doubt that Conjurer are a band to watch.
