Coven was founded in Chicago in the late 1960s and is regarded as a pioneer of occult rock. Their music blends psychedelic rock, acid rock and early proto‑metal.
Frontwoman Jinx Dawson stands out with her theatrical style and occult themes. The debut album 'Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls' (1969) introduced satanic rituals into rock music. In 1971, the band scored a Top 40 hit with 'One Tin Soldier', known from the film 'Billy Jack'. After a break of more than three decades since the 1970s, they returned in 2007 with new performances. Their influence remains enduring: Coven is seen as a founding force of occult rock and an inspiration for later metal bands.
