Call it progressive death metal or metalcore, the guys from After the Burial couldn’t care less. After all, this American band from Twin Cities, Minnesota, is certainly not your typical deathcore outfit.
A relentless barrage of hectic riffs and complicated chord progressions is what this progressive/extreme metal act unleashes with the utmost precision. Singer Anthony Notarmaso has an unusually broad range including screams, growls as well as the occasional clean vocals. The guitars on ‘In Dreams’ (2010) are more ‘Mechuggah’-oriented, but thanks to the inventive breakdowns, varied guitar work and some well-placed solos, After the Burial put their own spin on things. If you’re into Gojira and Meshuggah then you’ll definitely like After the Burial. Their recent EP ‘Embrace’ (2023) contains more of what they call “metal for the thinking man and… not for the weak”.
