The Bay Area is often considered synonymous with US thrash but the East Coast also had its fair share of old school thrash bands. One of those early leading lights in that neck of the woods was Whiplash.
They never hit the big leagues but are widely recognised as one of the driving forces behind the East Coast thrash scene in the 80s. The band around guitarist/vocalist and Tony Portaro formed in 1984 in New Jersey. Their debut ‘Power and Pain’ is part of any self-respecting thrash fan’s record collection. Their eventful history is marked by frequent personnel changes and two hiatuses, the second one from 1999 till 2009. They then reformed and have continued to tour ever since. Their track record includes an appearance on the 70,000 Tons of metal tour and they also headlined several thrash festivals in the States. Their 8th studio effort has been in the making for years and meanwhile they continue to play live shows. These guys epitomise the expression ‘thrash till death’ and we can’t wait to welcome these thrash pioneers.
