ALCATRAZ LOW IMPACT
Joining forces for a more sustainable festival!
True to form, ALCATRAZ FESTIVAL spares no effort to minimise the environmental impact of three days of amazing music. Just like last year, we are taking concrete steps to make our festival more sustainable. Not empty words but positive action. Together with our partners and you, our festival-goers, we can truly make a difference!
ECO COINS: KEEPING THE FESTIVAL ARENA TIDY
As usual, cups, PET bottles and cans will be collected efficiently and separately. At the start of the festival you will receive two eco coins that can be used to order drinks at normal price. Having two eco coins instead of just one makes it easier to buy another metalhead a drink. Hand in an empty cup at the bar and you get a fresh drink at the standard price. If you lose a cup or don’t hand one in then you will be charged half a coin extra. Not thirsty right now? Then exchange your empty cup for an eco coin. At the end of the festival day you can exchange your last cup or 2 eco coins for a unique ALCATRAZ gadget.
Last year this system helped us reduce the plastic waste mountain by 400,000 cups! Other waste material that is abandoned after the festival is also sorted and recycled with maximum efficiency.
SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES: SMALL STEPS, MAJOR IMPACT
For this new edition we are teaming up again with SURA IMPACT to make sustainable choices and set ambitious goals. Here are a few of our green plans:
- Energy: we strive to reduce our energy consumption through local and renewable energy generation. Where possible, generators are equipped with battery storage and solar panels.
- Food: more vegetarian and locally sourced food reduces our food footprint. Surplus food is avoided or distributed to local organisations. Our collaboration with Aqualex remains in place, eliminating the need for transport and packaging of water bottles.
- Transport: we are exploring ways to reduce car traffic and encourage more visitors to travel to the festival by train, bus, bicycle or carpool.
- Waste: in addition to cups, all other waste streams at the festival and at the campsite are also sorted with maximum efficiency.
- Carbon footprint: The data needed to calculate our carbon footprint in the future is being collected.
PARTNERSHIPS FOR A GREENER FESTIVAL
By partnering with Kamping Kitsch we are able to reduce our footprint in terms of material, transport and set-up. We work with the City of Kortrijk, the surrounding neighbourhoods and local NGOs to avoid disturbances and protect nature so that everyone can enjoy our festival to the max.
THE ALCATRAZ CAMPSITE: GREENER & CLEANER
Take care of your belongings and take your tent and camping equipment home with you. Items that are left behind will be donated to CAW Zuid-West-Vlaanderen to benefit the homeless.
Leftover tents are collected by UNIEKSTUK and transformed into dress-up clothing and sand toys for children.
Surplus food is collected by Voedselbank West-Vlaanderen.
Festival-goers who collect and sort waste at the campsite get a free cup of coffee for every full refuse bag.
