When Crypt Sermon was minted in Philadelphia in 2013, their intention was to deliver a contemporary interpretation of the regal doom metal of bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Trouble.
Before 2013 was through, ‘Demo MMXIII’ paved the way to an album deal with indie label Dark Descent. The albums ‘Out of the Garden’ (2015) and ‘The Ruins of Fading Light’ (2019) foreshadowed what is undoubtedly their best album so far. ‘The Stygian Rose’ (2024) follows the adventures of an unnamed character on his quest to find his lost love. ‘The Stygian Rose’ wears its kinship with Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus on its sleeve but also offers a host of traditional heavy metal elements, Maiden-style harmonies and duelling guitar solos that would do Judas Priest proud. Black Sabbath is yet another name that spontaneously comes to mind. Crypt Sermon haven’t visited these parts before so mark their set on your festival schedules!
