For many metalheads, ‘Burn My Eyes’ still ranks high on their list of most sensational debuts ever.
Thirty years on, Machine Head still raises many a heartbeat in the metal community. The band was founded in Oakland in 1991 by Robb Flynn, who is the sole remaining original band member. Recognised as one of the most influential bands of the new wave of American heavy metal, Machinehead still found it difficult to build a solid fanbase in the US until later in their career. Meanwhile in Europe their first four releases had established them as a household name and one of the leading acts on the metal scene thanks to generous groove metal and nu-metal influences. At the start of the new millennium they took a more traditional thrash approach and their popularity remained intact in spite of several line-up changes. ‘Of Kingdom and Crown’, their latest spawn and first concept album, makes a lasting impact with groovy thrash; the addition of Decapitated axeman Wacław Kiełtyka - aka Vogg – is an absolute masterstroke. Alcatraz has big expectations of Machine Head as one of this year’s headliners.
