Sean Bilovecky and Gwyn Strang originally aspired to a career as fashion designers but a fortuitous meeting in 2017 not only lit the flame of romance but also led to a musical collaboration.
Their off-kilter taste in music resulted in a singular genre that has since been gaining notoriety under the moniker ‘witch rock’. In a slow and cumbersome but very enthusing way, the American band takes cues from Sleep, Portishead, Björk, Kyuss and Black Sabbath. Their witch rock sounds like ‘doom-meets-trip-hop-meets-stoner-meets-post-metal’ and is one of a kind. Their debut ‘1692’ (2020) and follow-up ‘’Skin & Sorrow’ (2022) are both of the same ilk. Frayle doesn’t innovate but excels at implementing the so-called KISS principle: keep it simple, stupid! Mammoth hooks, a doomy & ethereal atmosphere and the entrancing vocals of siren Gwyn Strang will lovingly throttle the Alcatraz faithful this summer.
